Meet Dr. Sims
“I chose to be a doctor because I like interacting with people, and I wanted a rewarding career where I was able to give back – medicine gave me those things”
Dr. Matthew Sims is a board-certified urologist who treats general urological conditions and specializes in treating urological cancers. His clinical specialties include urologic oncology, prostate and bladder cancer, kidney cancer, testicular cancer, robotic surgery, and enlarged prostate (BPH). A native of Germantown, Dr. Sims grew up in the area and attended St George’s Independent School. He went on to attend college at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, where he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. After his undergraduate education, he came back to the Memphis area for medical school and earned his MD at University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis. He completed five years of additional training during his residency & internship at the University of Missouri – Columbia.
Dr. Sims was always interested in medical school because he liked the sciences and enjoyed interacting with people. He was drawn to urology as a specialty because it offered a unique blend of both clinical care, where he could build relationships with patients, and surgical care that allowed him to use the latest minimally invasive technologies to treat urological conditions. Dr. Sims is experienced in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including Da Vinci Robotic surgery, and has more than eight years of experience performing robotic procedures. He has a particular clinical interest in prostate care, including prostate biopsies, prostate cancer treatment, and management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He also performs advanced BPH procedures such as TURP and robotic simple prostatectomy for patients with large prostates, helping improve outcomes and recovery times.
Dr. Sims is highly experienced in the treatment of bladder cancer, including transurethral resection of non–muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) for tumor removal and initial management. His interest in urologic oncology, particularly bladder cancer, was further developed during his residency, where he received extensive specialized training in these procedures. In addition, his robotic surgery experience includes simple and radical prostatectomy for cancer and BPH, as well as kidney tumor removal and kidney reconstruction.
When it comes to taking care of patients, Dr. Sims is an advocate for shared decision making. He aims to make sure that his patients know about all the treatment options available to them. From there he will make recommendations, but he feels it is valuable for the patient to be a part of the decision-making process. Ultimately, together they will decide on the right treatment that matches the patient’s lifestyle and personal desires.
Dr. Sims enjoys being a part of the team at the Conrad Pearson Clinic because as a group they all know each other and work well together to provide optimal patient care. When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife who is also a doctor in the Memphis area. Together they have two dogs and two cats. He and his wife, Emma, enjoy going out to dinner, playing golf and watching sports. He likes watching soccer and basketball, but in the fall they are big fans of Michigan football and the Kansas City Chiefs. They also love traveling together and their favorite trips were to SE Asia and Munich, Germany for Oktoberfest.
Dr. Sims sees patients at all three Conrad Pearson Clinic office locations.
